S ince 1903, the Shepherds- grandfather, father, and son- have directed the funerals of Western North Carolina residents. When first established, the business' primary focus was furniture and general merchandise. "Coffins" were sold as a sideline item, which was the custom of furniture stores in that day. The late Thos. Shepherd served as manager in those early days and later acquired ownership in the mid 1920's from other family members. In 1924, one of Western North Carolina's first residential-type funeral establishments was built on South Church Street.
In 1934, Thomas' son, William, joined the firm and served as Managing Director and President until his death in 1965. Under William Shepherd's leadership, Shepherd Memorial Park was established in 1954 in Henderson County's first public, non-sectarian, perpetual care cemetery.
The founder's grandson, Thos. R. Shepherd, continues that tradition of family-owned service to our community, and currently serves as our President.
Serving most of the Blue Ridge Highlands, we are humbled to be the most requested funeral home in Western North Carolina, and welcome the opportunity to demonstrate our willingness to work hard for your approval, your friendship, and your goodwill.
