Our History

Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors have served North Carolina since 1903. Three generations of Shepherds have directed funerals in Western North Carolina; our family works hard for your trust.

Our history begins in 1903, in a furniture and general merchandise store. Thos. Shepherd served as manager and sold “coffins” on the side. In the 1920s, Thos. Shepherd acquired the store, which is now a part of the National Register of Historic Places. Today the store is owned by the descendants of M. M. and Thomas Shepherd.

In 1924, Thomas opened one of the first funeral establishments in Western North Carolina. His son, William joined the family business in 1934, and served as Managing Funeral Director and President until his death in 1965. During his management, Shepherd Memorial Park was established, Henderson County’s first public, non-sectarian, perpetual care cemetery.

Today, the founder’s grandson, Thomas R. Shepherd continues the tradition of family-owned, first class service.
