Lucille Girard Shipley died on the evening of December 28, 2019. She will be greatly missed by her family as well as her friends at The Bridge at Lake Pointe Landing.
Lucille was born December 2, 1923 in East Detroit, Michigan as the third, and very late in life, child of James and Lilly Girard, who lovingly referred to her as “a surprise, a very pleasant surprise.” At the time of her birth, Lucille’s siblings, Earl and Evelyn were 23 and 18. They doted on her. Their children: Dona, Earl Jr., Girard, and Larry were more like siblings than nieces and nephews.
Lucille attended school in East Detroit and married her high school sweetheart, Charles Shipley shortly before he was deployed to India during WWII. Lucille was a homemaker until her children were in high school and college. She then became the owner/operator of a successful business in the Detroit area. Her love of reading, humor and her political viewpoints made her a joy to be with. She was known for her sense of style and loved snazzy cars including her Fiero, El Camino and Mustang. She was always a strong advocate for her family.
Lucille was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, her husband, Chuck, her son, James and son-in-law, Rick. She is survived by her daughters Sally Aleen Shipley of Lopez Island, WA, Linell McCrum of Kenai, AK, Dawn Bartholic and son-in-law Glenn Bartholic of Hendersonville, NC. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Linell (Greg) Letendre of Colorado Springs, CO, Paul Bartholic of Asheville, NC, Daniel (Rachel) Shipley of Sioux Falls, SD, Charles Shipley of Bellingham, WA, Matthew McCrum of Kenai, AK, and Ryan McCrum of Page, AZ; plus 7 great grandchildren: Madelyn & Ethan Letendre, Riley & Tess Bartholic, and Isaac, Elli & Iver Shipley.
A graveside service will be held on a later date at St. Anne’s Cemetery on Mackinac Island, Michigan. If you are interested in making a gift in her memory, please consider the Homebound Services of Henderson County Public Library, NC or The Elizabeth House, a part of the Four Seasons Hospice Foundation.

Mrs. Shipley was a lovely lady and always welcomed us into her home . As junior high school kids it was a special stop on the walk home. It was there I was introduced to pecan pie. I still love it to this day and think of her any time we enjoy it. We also shared a love of cats and I am sure she was greeted by her loving kitty when she passed over. Our hearts and prayers go out to the entire family and hope only happy memories replace your sadness. Love to you all.
