Patsy Capps Covey, 75 of Hendersonville, died Sunday, January 6, 2019 at Carolina Village Medical Center.

 

She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert H. Capps and Sina T. Capps; three brothers, Carl Capps, Eddie Capps, and Harris Capps; and one sister, Geneva Capps.

 

Patsy was a native of Henderson County, NC, but spent many years in Mobile, AL where she was employed by the University of South Alabama.  She received her B.A. degree from the University of North Carolina at Asheville, and her Ph.D., from Clemson University.  Following the receiving of Ph.D. she was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina Medical School in Chapel Hill.   Her post-doctoral studies were in neurophysiology.

 

At the University of South Alabama she was chair of Clinical Laboratory Studies and then was founding Dean of the College of Allied Health Professions.  Patsy was later named Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at the university.  Upon her retirement, the university re-named the College of Allied Health Professions the Patsy Capps Covey College of Allied Health Professions in her honor.

 

She is survived by her loving husband Leeman “Lee” H. Covey; a sister, Jean Sherman of Hendersonville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at St. John-in-the-Wilderness Episcopal Church with Rev. William  McClerry officiating.  A reception will be held immediately following the service in the church Parish Hall.  A graveside service will be held at a later date at Mountain View United Methodist Church in Dublin, VA.
