Calla May Rogers, 89, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at Elizabeth House Hospice on December 19, one week before her 90th birthday, with her loving daughter Martha by her side. Calla was born December 26, 1927 in Rockford, Illinois, to the late Harry and Louise Smith.
A devout Christian, Calla’s faith in God made her a role model for her family and others around her. She prayed daily, and often cited Scripture from memory. And her memory was nothing short of miraculous, as anyone who knew her was quite aware.
Calla and her late husband Bob made their home in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where they raised their four children. Calla’s greatest joy was spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her love of children was unparalleled, and she would stop in her tracks to marvel at the sweetness of a child.
Calla touched many lives with her loving, gracious and calm demeanor. She was a good listener and always lifted the spirits of those around her with her infectious laugh and beautiful smile.
Always up for an adventure, Calla and Bob were avid travelers, taking them across Europe, Egypt, Greece (their favorite), and countless other countries.
True to her selfless and giving nature, Calla, for many years, volunteered at both Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak and Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, touching so many lives with her kindness. Calla had two years of nurses training as a young woman.
Calla had a passion for all kinds of music, from Tony Bennett to The Beatles to the many hymns she knew by heart. As a young lady, she was awarded a scholarship to The Cincinnati Conservatory of Music for playing viola. She also sang in many church choirs.
She is survived by her sister, Louise Cascione; children, Cindy (Fred) Smith, Bob (Elaine) Rogers, Martha (Tom) Martin, Carl (Mary) Rogers; grandchildren, Tracey (Jon)Bassett, Joe (Annie) Martin, Kelly (Corwin) Harrell, Charlotte Rogers, Emma Rogers, Lucy Rogers, Fritz Burt; and great-grandchildren, Corbin and Sam Bassett.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 29, 2017 in Thos. Shepherd’s Church Street Chapel, with Pastor Michael McFarland officiating. A private burial will be held at Shepherd Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends on Friday, prior to the service, from 12:00 to 12:45 p.m. in the chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Emmanuel Lutheran School, 51 Wilburn Place, Asheville, NC 28806.
