Thomas Joel Davis Jr., 80, from Laurel Park, NC, died in his sleep during the night of October 7, 2018, of complications of Parkinson’s disease. He was a physician in Nashville, TN, for most of his adult life.

Dr. Davis was born Jan. 6, 1938 in Washington, DC. He attended Montgomery County, MD, public schools and graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in 1955. He attended Princeton University in Princeton, NJ, was a member of the ROTC, and majored in philosophy. He met Jane through Roderick Heller, Jane’s first cousin and Tom’s best friend in high school and college. Upon graduation from Princeton in 1959, he matriculated at University of Pennsylvania Perelman Medical School in Philadelphia, PA, graduating in 1963. He served as an intern at King County Hospital in Seattle, WA. He entered the U.S. Army in 1964, attaining the rank of captain, and served as a physician in the 56th Field Artillery Group until 1967. He won an internal medicine residency appointment in San Francisco, CA, where he served until 1970. He moved with his young family to Nashville, TN, in 1970, where he was a beloved member of the medical community as an internist and cardiologist in private practice until his retirement in 1999. He moved to Laurel Park with Jane, where he served on the boards of ECO, now Mountain True, and CMLC, now Conserving Carolina. He was active as a volunteer with Bullington Gardens, a local literacy tutoring group, and attended classes in pomology through the Extension Service of Henderson County, NC.

Tom was a lifelong athlete, a marathon runner, bicyclist, whitewater canoeist, tennis player, and triathlon competitor. Among the marathons he completed were the Boston, New York, and New Orleans marathons. He enjoyed camping, where he was known to enjoy a cheap cigar by the campfire. He loved canoeing with his family in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on the border of Minnesota and the Canadian Province of Ontario, and hiking in the Savage Gulf State Natural Area in Grundy County, TN.

Tom loved fine wine and good food. He was not a great cook inside, but was a genius outdoors with a barbecue grill. Nothing gave him more pleasure than conversation over a gourmet meal cooked by Jane. He enjoyed traveling in Europe with Jane, sampling the local cuisine, frequently with their old friends Anita and Haley Fromholz.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jane Allston (Loveless) Davis, whom he married in her hometown of Gallatin, TN, Dec. 31, 1961; his sister, Elizabeth Hailman, 81, of Jupiter, FL; three children, Anne Cook, 57, of Santa Rosa, CA; Thomas Joel Davis III, 55, of Philadelphia, PA; Sarah Oaks, 53, of White Salmon, WA; and five grandchildren, Grace and Melissa Davis; and William, Isaac and Mikah Oaks.

At Tom’s request, there will be no funeral services. A celebration of life for family and friends is being planned.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Bullington Gardens, Conserving Carolina or the Four Seasons Hospice, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.
