After a brief illness and a long happy productive life filled with love for her family and her nursing career, Helen peacefully passed into the arms of her Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, June 12, 2020. She was born on July 20, 1932 in Henderson County, daughter of Albert and Moenia Sproles. She graduated from Hendersonville High School in 1950. After high school she attended the School of Nursing at Riverside Hospital in Newport News, VA. She graduated with her R.N. degree in 1953. During her nursing school years, she met and married the love of her life Charlie Bonnett. After working several years on the nursing staff at Riverside Hospital they decided to move to Hendersonville in 1958. Helen quickly joined the nursing staff at Margaret R. Pardee Memorial hospital and served there until her retirement in 1994. After leaving Pardee’s full time nursing staff she continued her nursing career part time at the Pardee Education Center at the Blue Ridge Mall. Because of their love of serving others Helen and Charlie trained with Red Cross Disaster Relief and volunteered across the country including San Antonio and West Virginia. They were most grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of the Red Cross Disaster Team serving in New York City during the aftermath of the 9/11 bombing of the World Trade Center.
Helen is preceded in death by one brother J.B. Sproles and survived by two brothers; Charles Sproles and wife Patsy, Harold Sproles and wife Bethany, and sister Faith Searcy; her three children: Sandy Briggs (Steve) of Hendersonville, Terry O’Connor (Tim) of Knoxville, TN and Barry Bonnett of Hendersonville; five grandchildren, Jay Briggs (wife Amanda) of Greenville, SC; Shelley Briggs Nebel (husband Eric) of Altamont Springs, FL, Michael O’Connor of Knoxville, TN, Erin O’Connor Worman (husband Kelly) of Nashville, TN, and Christopher O’Connor (wife Maggie) of Chattanooga, TN and most importantly in her mind five great grandchildren, Cordelia Briggs, Hadley Worman, Millie Worman, Ruth Worman and Louie Nebel.
A graveside service was held 2:00 PM Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with the Pastor Steve Scoggins officiating. A public service will be held at First Baptist Church at a later date. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church for First Baptist Academy. 312 5th Ave W, Hendersonville, NC 28739, Thos.
