Lou Ellen Hammond, 66, of Hendersonville, NC, passed away suddenly, on Thursday, January 25, 2018. Lou was born on October 4, 1951 in Hendersonville, NC. Lou is survived by her brother, David Hammond, her niece, Melissa Clayton, her nephew, Charlie Hammond, grand nieces, Jasmine Clayton, Madison Clayton, and Amelia Hammond, and grandnephews Timmy Clayton and Jacob Hammond.
Lou received a Bachelors in Nursing from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. She earned a Master’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Lou’s nursing career spanned 37 years of Leadership and clinical positions at Mission Hospital including Head Nurse, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Clinical Nurse Specialist for Women and Children, Director, Clinical Support and Development, InterimVice President of Nursing, Vice President of Maternal/Child Services, and Senior Accreditation Coordinator and Patient Safety Specialist. Lou worked at Pardee Hospital from 2011 to the present as the Quality Management Coordinator and the Patient Relations representative in the Quality Services department. Lou was a recipient of the Great 100 Nurses in North Carolina in 1997. Lou also served in many leadership capacities at Balfour United Methodist Church as a lifetime member. Lou’s greatest strengths included excellent platform speaking skills, a sharp analytical mind, commitment, compassion and mentorship to hundreds of nurses, a devout belief in God, a willingness to serve others, a huge patient and family advocate and a beautiful soprano voice. She was absolutely devoted to her family. She was a gentle soul with a never ending joyful spirit. She was the calm in the center of a storm and she had a steadfast belief in always putting the patient first. A memorial service was conducted at Balfour United Methodist Church on Sunday, January 29, 2018. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lou Hammond Family Fund, Hometrust Bank, 228 6th Avenue East, Hendersonville, NC 28792.
