Emory L. Jackson, age 90 of Mills River, died Saturday, September 1, 2018 at Heather Glen at Ardenwoods. He was born November 25, 1927 in Miami, Florida; a son of the late, Guy Milton Jackson and Olive Ruth Betts Jackson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ruth Rigl Jackson in 2007.
A longtime resident of Henderson County; Mr. Jackson attended the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL and the University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL. He was the owner of Emory L. Jackson and Associates, Architects, AIA. Mr. Jackson designed many buildings in Western North Carolina, Florida and the Bahamas including: businesses, churches, schools, hospitals, fire departments, country clubs, hotels and private residences. One of his most enduring legacies is the redesign of Main Street in Hendersonville, to the current beautiful serpentine pattern which incorporated increased sidewalk areas for dining, pedestrian traffic, planters and artwork.
Mr. Jackson was a private pilot, motorcyclist, musician and amateur radio operator (K4KIZ). He was a past member of the Mills River Volunteer Fire Department, Civil Air Patrol, AOPA Experimental Aircraft Association, American Institute of Architects and the Quarter Century Wireless Association. He previously served on the Board of Directors for Northwestern Bank and the Salvation Army. He proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Navy as a fireman. He was a member of Mills River United Methodist Church. With his wife, Ruth, he enjoyed their small farm in Mills River, where they raised horses.
He is survived by three sons from his previous marriage to Louise Horne Jackson, Milton Jackson of Asheville, Don Jackson and his wife, Joanne of Fort Pierce, FL, and Dale Jackson and his wife, Linda Carney-Jackson of Mills River; two daughters with his wife, Ruth Jackson, Carolyn J. Duncan and her husband, Lorne of Mills River and Laura Fedak and her husband, Eric of Spring, TX; nine grandchildren, Taylor McDonald of Hendersonville, Erika, Annika and Zakery Fedak of Spring, TX, Vanessa A. Jackson of Thornton, CO, Paula L. Gerardo and her husband, Larry of Port Saint Lucie, FL, Andrew Carney-Jackson and his wife, Carol of Mills River, Scott Carney-Jackson and James Carney-Jackson of Asheville; six great-grandchildren; and by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at Mills River United Methodist Church, 137 Old Turnpike Road, Mills River, NC 28759 officiated by the Reverend Ashley Crowder Stanley, Sr. Pastor.
His family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 7, 2018 at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations in Emory’s memory be directed to the Mills River United Methodist Church, 137 Old Turnpike Road, Mills River, NC 28759; or to the Blue Ridge Honor Flight, 423 N. King Street, Hendersonville, NC 28793.
