Eugene J. “Gene” Maloney, age 78 of Hendersonville, died Thursday, October 4, 2018. He was born July 8, 1940, the fourth son of the late, John and Margaret Kotzbauer Maloney.

 

He graduated from St. Catherine’s High School; following graduation he went on to pursue a career in the United States Air Force. He was stationed in the United States and served tours in Oslo, Norway, Las Vegas, and Thailand. He was then assigned to the Air Force Headquarters at Ramstein Air Force Base; where he served for twenty-three years. He completed his college education while in Germany, obtaining his B.S. Degree from Boston College and his Master’s Degree from the University of Maryland. He also worked in the finance department for the U.S. Government in Europe, which gave him a vast knowledge of Europe, especially Germany. Following his discharge from the Air Force, he worked for the Department of Defense until he retired in 1990 to Hendersonville.

 

Gene was an avid gardener, book reader and making improvements to his house and property. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

 

He was married to the former Sylvia Curry and step-father to Monica Alper and grandfather to Meagan, Lauren and Brandon. Gene is also survived by three brothers, George of Lancaster, PA, John of Manhattan Beach, CA and Roy of Greenville, PA; three sisters, Mary Dimasi of George Town, TX, Katheryn “Kay” of Hendersonville and Margaret “Margie” of Orlando, FL; and by several nieces and nephews.

 

A memorial mass to celebrate his life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial will follow at 12:00 noon at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.
