George Harrison Stevens, Sr. age 85 of Hendersonville, died Tuesday, October 31st, 2017 at Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation. George was the only child of the late Wilmer J. and Kathleen Conley Stevens of Franklin, NC.

George Harrison Stevens, Sr. age 85 of Hendersonville, died Tuesday, October 31st, 2017 at Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation. George was the only child of the late Wilmer J. and Kathleen Conley Stevens of Franklin, NC.

 

A native of Haywood County, he and his wife moved to Henderson County several years ago. George retired after 36 years of service with Novartis Pharmaceuticals, and then six more years of consulting with Novartis in the field of mental illness.

 

George was a Christian, loving Husband, Father, Mason, Shriner and a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, serving as an Aid Man in the 7th Mobile Army Surgical Unit. He graduated from Canton High School, Georgia Military Academy and Western Carolina University, class of 1957. He was a strong advocate of the mentally ill, having served for seven years on the board of directors of the Broughton Foundation in Broughton Hospital, Morganton, NC. He served for many years as a volunteer for the Western Carolina Rescue Mission in Asheville, where he spent many hours helping their clientele rehab into society. He served as an elder in both the Kenilworth Presbyterian Church in Asheville and in the First Presbyterian Church in Canton. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville.

 

Surviving is his wife of many years, Jane Beddingfield Stevens; three children, George H. Stevens, Jr., Michael J. Stevens of Buncombe County and Cindy Brooks Miller of Hendersonville; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

 

His funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 6th, 2017 in Thos. Shepherd’s Church Street Chapel. Burial will follow in Shepherd Memorial Park.

 

His family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
