Jack Walter Hallberg, age 87 of Hendersonville, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 20, 2018 at the Carolina Village Medical Center after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was born on November 17, 1930 in Chicago, IL to the late, Walter and Elsa Hallberg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Lee “Babe” Hallberg.
He grew up in Western Springs and was graduated from Miami University in Ohio. After graduation, he proudly served his country in the Army, where he was on active duty during the Korean War. After discharge from the Army, he began his successful 30 year career as a banker with the First National Bank of Chicago, working both in Chicago and in New York City in many roles.
In 1986, Jack retired to Hendersonville, NC where he soon became an active member of his church, Grace Lutheran and his community. He belonged to the Hendersonville Country Club where he played lots of golf, a game he loved, and made many friends. He served for many years as a volunteer for the Hendersonville Sheriff’s Department where, among his other duties, he helped with security at the county courthouse.
In addition to his family, Jack loved the White Sox, the great game of golf, gardening and his church. He was a skilled woodworker, a talent inherited from his father, creating many beautiful pieces of furniture over the years.
He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Joyce Hallberg; his children, Rebecca Jameson and her husband, Chris, Stacey Hallberg and her husband, David Reilly; step-children, Lisa Greenfield and Michael Berman; his grandchildren, Kristian Jameson and Grace Reilly; his brother, Bruce Hallberg and his wife, Joan; his sister-in-law, Nancy Hallberg; and by many other Hallberg/Olin nieces and nephews and cousins.
The family thanks the staff of both the Carolina Village Care Center and Medical Center for their superb and loving care.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at Grace Lutheran Church.
