Dr. James F. Chambliss, Jr., age 81, of Hendersonville, NC died Saturday, June 30, 2018, at home. James Francis Chambliss, Jr. was born February 24, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois to James  and Mary “Katie” (Curran) Chambliss.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Michael.

 

 

He was raised in Wilmette, Illinois and graduated from Saint Francis Xavier School in 1951, Loyola Academy in 1955 and Boston College in 1959.  James earned his medical degree from Georgetown University in 1964, followed by a surgical internship at Presbyterian-St.Luke’s Hospital in Chicago.  Following his internship, he served as an officer and physician in the US Navy with stints in Guam and Chichijima from 1965 to 1967 before returning to Presbyterian-St. Luke’s for a residency in radiology and the beginning his career as a radiologist in Chicago in 1970.

 

 

James was the Director of the Department of Radiology at Columbus Hospital in Chicago from 1977-1982 before serving as the Executive Medical Director of the Columbus-Cabrini-Cuneo Medical Center from 1982-1989.  James then moved to the University of Chicago where he was the Chief of Radiology at Weiss Hospital for ten years and then interim chief and staff member of the University’s Section of Breast Imaging. With board certification in radiology, nuclear medicine, and medical management,  Dr. Chambliss was known to his colleagues and patients as a skilled and caring physician and administrator.

 

 

Before relocating to Hendersonville in 2014, James was a member of St. Athanasius Parish in Evanston and Evanston Golf Club.  During his time in Hendersonville, he was a member of Champion Hills Club and regularly volunteered at Interfaith Assistance Ministry where he helped community members overcome financial crisis. James’ hobbies included tennis, woodworking, banjo, shooting, golf and flying.

 

 

Survivors include his wife Elizabeth J. LaVoo; four children, Catherine Chambliss and her husband, Thomas, Rebecca Chambliss, Michelle Chambliss and Michael Chambliss and his wife, Stacy; four grandchildren, Katie, Grace, Stella and James; one brother Richard Chambliss and his wife, Betty; three sisters, Mary Frances Witte, Ellen Dugan and her husband, Al and Judith Chambliss and her husband, Allan.

 

 

A memorial mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 13, 2018 in the Sanctuary of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

 

 

The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Thursday evening at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Home.

 

 

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to Interfaith Assistance Ministry, https://www.iamhendersoncounty.org or Immaculata Catholic School in Hendersonville, https://www.immac.org.

 

 

Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors and Cremation Memorial Center is in charge of the arrangements.
