John Bayard Peri of Hendersonville died Thursday, January 25,2018 at Elizabeth House in Flat Rock. He survived his wife, Dr. Barbara Miller Peri by 16 months. They had been married for 70 years. He was 94 years old.
Dr.Peri was born in Stockton, California, where he graduated from Stockton High School. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, receiving a BS in Chemistry in 1943. He served in the US Navy. After Midshipman’s school and further training he served as a radar officer with Carrier Air Group II to the end of World War II in 1946. He married Barbara Anne Miller in Berkeley, CA in 1946, and the couple then entered Graduate School at the University of Wisconsin, Madison where he earned his Ph.D. in 1949.
He first worked as a Research Chemist for the California Research Corporation, the research division of Standard Oil of California ( now Chevron) for 8 years. In 1957 he moved to the Midwest where he worked for Standard of Indiana ( later Amoco, now BP) in Whiting, Indiana and Naperville, Illinois, until his retirement in 1986. He was internationally recognized for his basic research on the surface chemistry of catalysts and other high-area solids, received patents, published over 50 papers, and spoke frequently at universities and scientific meetings in the US and abroad. He chaired numerous meeting and research sessions and served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Physical Chemistry and the Journal of Catalysis. Following retirement he moved to Boston and Falmouth, Massachusetts where he served for a number of years as Adjunct Professor in the Chemical Engineering Department of Northeastern University. He was a member of the American Chemical Society and of Sigma Xi for over 50 years.
In retirement he became an ardent genealogist and was active in the Falmouth Genealogical Society, of which he was a past President. He regularly provided genealogical assistance to others in the community, and produced a series of programs on genealogy for Falmouth Community Television. He and his wife were active travelers and made many trips abroad. Other interests included history, language studies, music, and model shipbuilding. He was a member of the Falmouth Historical Society, Friends of the Falmouth Public Library, an Associate of WHOI and MBL, and a patron of the College Light Opera Company. He and his wife moved to Lake Pointe Landing in the fall of 2014.
He is survived by his three daughters, Pamela Pazoles and husband Christopher of Hendersonville, NC., Phyllis Peri of Cornucopia, WI., and Janet Gillies and husband Neil of Baker, WV., along with 3 grandchildren, Katharine Pazoles, Matthew Pazoles and wife Brooke, and Jennifer Gillies.
