Johnny Curtis Johnson, 90 of Hendersonville, died Monday, July 23, 2018 at Pardee Hospital. He was born September 2, 1927 in Henderson County to the late Thomas Franklin Johnson and Louise Grice Johnson.

 

 

He enlisted in the Navy in 1945 after graduation from Flat Rock High School. At the end of that enlistment Johnny returned home. He attended and graduated from the then Mars Hill Junior College in 1950 with plans to pursue a teaching career.

 

 

He was called back to active duty at the start of the Korean War and assigned to sea duty as a radarman and operations specialist. After the Korean War ended Johnny continued on active duty. Sea duty billets included service aboard minesweepers, destroyers and cruisers. A highlight of his sea deployments was a world cruise. Shore duty billets were primarily as a training instructor. After serving in the Navy for 27 years he retired from active service and began a civilian career continuing on as a professional training instructor for major defense companies.

 

 

Johnny was a good and kind man throughout his life. As the oldest child he took care of his parents, four brothers, and one sister and continued to do so throughout his life. As a husband and father he devoted his life to care and provide for his wife, three daughters and one son. He supported their education and other activities as gateways to life’s opportunities.

 

 

Johnny is survived by his wife, Betty Jo Beddingfield Johnson; one son, Thomas Wayne Johnson of Stafford, VA; three daughters, Melanie Karol Johnson Walls of Hendersonville, Gloria Patricia Johnson Vickers of Tulsa, OK and Coleen Gail Johnson of Leesburg, VA; grandchildren, Brian Vickers, Emily Vickers, April Kirby, Curtis and Greg Doyle, Thomas and Matthew Johnson; and by great grandchildren, Maddison and Mylene Doyle, Tiffany and Everly Doyle, Adaline Johnson and Wolfgang Vickers.

 

 

He is also survived by his brother, Charles Lawrence Johnson and his wife, Peggy of Hendersonville; and by his sister, Ruby Lyda and her husband, Clyde of Rogersville, TN. He was preceded in death by three brothers, James Franklin Johnson, Paul Herman Johnson and Clarence Edward Johnson.

 

 

His funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 29, 2018 in Thos. Shepherd’s Church Street Chapel. Burial will follow at the Tracy Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

 

His family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service.
