Kenneth William Wilkie, 74, of Hendersonville, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family Saturday, June 2, 2018 at the Elizabeth House following a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert E. Lee Wilkie and Birdetta Wilkie, and sister Judy Phillips.

He was a member of the West Henderson High School Class of 1962. Shortly after graduating high school, he joined the NC National Guard. He met Barbara Hyder at local hang-out Brock’s Drive-In in 1962, and they were married December 20, 1964.

A native and lifelong resident of Henderson County, he owned Kenneth W. Wilkie Construction Company for 45 years, and built and designed beautiful custom homes throughout Henderson and Buncombe counties. He was a founding member and three-time president of the Hendersonville Home Builders Association, and four-time winner of the Builder of the Year Award. Mr. Wilkie cherished the many personal relationships he formed with his employees, clients, suppliers, sub-contractors, and fellow builders.

He was an avid golfer and a car enthusiast, and in his retirement he loved buying and restoring antique Chevy pick-ups. He loved having breakfast every morning and visiting with everyone at Pop’s Diner. More than anything, he loved being “Bop” to his precious great-grandson, Bentley. They rode the tractor and the trucks together all the time.

Mr. Wilkie was, above all, a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family meant everything to him, and he will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Barbara Hyder Wilkie; daughters Gina Ikner, and husband Charles Ikner of Lexington, Kentucky, and Amber Hudson, and husband Willis Hudson of Hendersonville; grandchildren Braden and Kendall Williams of Hendersonville; step-grandchildren Madison and Walker Hudson of Hendersonville; great-grandson Bentley Williams of Hendersonville; sister Doris Wise and husband A. J. Wise of Hendersonville; and several nieces and nephews.

His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 7, 2018 at Shepherd Memorial Park officiated by the Reverend Matt Williamson.

His family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m.  until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service in the Shepherd Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel.

Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors are in charge of the arrangements.
