Robert W. Magel, 94, of Hendersonville, NC, passed away at Carolina Village Medical Center on Tuesday, March 20, 2018.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Joan Macaulay Magel who passed away in 2010.

He was born April 29, 1923 and grew up in Demarest, NJ with 3 brothers, one of whom, David, was his fraternal twin.  He graduated from Tenafly High School in NJ and he and his twin were accepted at Rutgers University.  Both brothers excelled in sports where they were ranked in the top 5 of all tennis doubles teams in the state and both played junior varsity level football at Rutgers.

After two years at college, Bob and his twin left college and enlisted in the Army Air Corp. where both became fighter pilots in P-47 Thunderbolts in the European front.  They participated in the D-Day Invasion and flew numerous missions over France and Germany.  Bob and his brother were in the 56th Fighter Group of the 63rd Fighter Squadron (part of Zemke’s “Wolf Pack” stationed in Norwich, England).  Bob was shot down in August 1944 and was interred as a P.O.W. in GermanY for 9 months where he was liberated by Gen. Patton’s army on his 22nd birthday.  Unfortunately, his twin brother was shot down and killed in action the day after Bob was shot down.

Bob was honorably discharged as a Flight Officer in 1945.  He married Joan Allen Macaulay on July 21, 1945.  He and Joan had one child, Robert Magel Jr.  Bob started in sales in LaGrange, IL, then moved to Closter, NJ where he took a job in Pelham, NY for Phillip Stahl & Co where he spent 38 years, working his way up to VP of Sales & Operations.

After retiring at age 65, he and Joan moved to Hendersonville, NC where he has lived since.

He played tennis until his early 80’s and table tennis until his late 80’s running a Carolina Village league.  He was known for his friendliness and unique ability to adapt easily to changes he experienced throughout his life.  He became good on the harmonica late in life and was even featured in a photo in Carolina Village brochures and advertising.

Bob is the last of the 4 Magel brothers to pass away.  He was also preceded in death by his 2 older brothers, John and Frank.

Bob is survived by his son, Robert Jr. and his wife, Carole, of Lancaster, PA and two grandchildren, Tracy Magel of Egg Harbor Twp., NJ and Christopher Magel and his wife, Caitlin, of Corvallis, OR.  Bob is also survived by nieces and nephews, John Magel and wife, Chris, of Sanford, MI, David Magel and wife Donna of Coldwater, MI, Catherine Magel of Glendale, MO, Frank Magel and wife Laura of Mechanicsburg, PA and Christine Czarnecki and her husband Steven of Apalachin, NY.

No memorial service is planned per Bob’s wishes.
