Thomas S. “Tom” Freeman, age 84 of Hendersonville, died Friday, October 19, 2018 at Margaret R. Pardee Memorial Hospital. Tom was born August 10, 1934 in Milledgeville, Georgia; a son of the late James Thomas Freeman and Jessie Mercer Freeman.

 

Tom was a graduate of Georgia Military College in Milledgeville and received his degree in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. He was employed with Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company of West Allis, Wisconsin and Siemens of Germany for 41 years.

 

Upon graduating from college, Tom was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Reserves where he served for 28 years until his retirement on August 10, 1994. At his retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel, Infantry, he was awarded the Army’s Meritorious Service Medal. He was a graduate of the Army’s Infantry Basic Officer and Advanced Officer Course as well as The Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Washington, DC and Command and General Staff of Ft. Leavenworth, KS.

 

After a short time on active duty with the Army, Tom moved to West Allis, Wisconsin to begin his career and met Joanne Johndrow, they were married on August 23, 1958. They were then transferred to Birmingham, Alabama and later to Pittsburgh and Reading, Pennsylvania respectively. He was last stationed in Raleigh where he retired in January of 1997. Following retirement, he and Joanne built their retirement home in Hendersonville.

 

Tom was active in numerous organizations over the years including: the Jaycees, Indian Guides, Reserve Officer’s Association, Association of Iron and Steel Engineers and served as Chairman of the Power Engineering Society of the Pittsburgh Section of The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He was active in the Boy Scouts for many years after having achieved the rank of Eagle Scout as a young man and later served as Advancement Chairmen of the Nemacolin Trails Council in Pennsylvania.

 

Tom served the Lord in a number of churches over the years and was most recently an active member of  The First Alliance Church in Hendersonville, serving as their Treasurer. He is also a past member of The Gideons.

 

He is survived by his wife of 60 years: Joanne Johndrow Freeman; two sons: James Thomas Freeman and his wife, Michelle of Wake Forest and Robert Leslie Freeman of Winston Salem; one grandson: John Thomas Freeman; as well as one granddaughter: Ava Marie Freeman both of Wake Forest. One brother, Harold Dean Freeman and his wife, Kaye of Flowery Branch, GA; and one brother-in-law, Richard Johndrow and his wife, Julane of Midlothian, VA; as well as with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

 

His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at the First Alliance Church officiated by the Reverend Ronald Glass and Reverend Don Chapman. Burial will be in the Salisbury National Cemetery.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Samaritan’s Purse, for North Carolina Hurricane Relief, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28670.
