Evelyn Roberson Frye

Mills River

Evelyn Roberson Frye was born on July 8, 1927, the fourth of six children of Carl and Delia Roberson. She grew up in Rutherford County on a small farm, her father also working at Stonecutter textile mill. In 1946, she married Ray Frye after he returned from the Navy at the end of WWII. The couple lived in Spindale, NC through the births of their sons Rick, Terry, and Leslie; Tony was born in East Flat Rock, NC. Ray died in 1982 of cardiac failure after the ’empty nesters’ moved from Summerville, SC, to Mills River, NC.

In her sixties, to everyone’s surprise, Evelyn took a job as custodian of her Mills River United Methodist Church. She lobbied at Board meetings, in particular accomplishing the saving of the original historic church windows. She was known to barter blackberry pies with church members to get help at home. In her eighties, Evelyn could mow two acres of lawn (she especially enjoyed running over snakes) and carry loads of firewood upstairs. She continued to be an active member of Mills River UMC, especially in MRLEC and the Prime Timers, shaming Board members into volunteering for the blood drive when there weren’t enough volunteers. After catching a robbery in progress at her home, she helped break up a ring of thieves by supplying the sheriff with information she’d independently put together (she got her jewelry back, too). But at 90, her body and mind no longer gave her the freedom to live the independent life she’d enjoyed. She was ready to move on when she died in her sleep on April 5, 2018.

Evelyn’s sons benefitted from her teaching them that “if we put our minds to it, we could do it” and giving them the freedom to mess up. This resulted on one occasion in molten solder from an exploding radio dancing across her red Formica topped table, leaving black trails, at which point she merely asked, “Is there a safer way to work on that?” She taught various sons to refinish and reupholster furniture, to can and make jellies, and to sew and repair sewing machines. She was an active grandma to her grandchildren, writing and calling them and having them visit by themselves in the summers. She started quilting groups at two churches and made gorgeous quilts. Her children remember the many times she laughed until she cried, her biscuits topped with her strawberry freezer jam, her unparalleled pickled beets, and her feisty spirit. She could manifest this spirit, for example, with a combination of religion and the threat to use her 410 shotgun if necessary to protect herself and her neighbors.

Evelyn is survived by her sons Rick (Leonor), Terry (Jeanie Aycock and their daughter Elizabeth), Les (Jenny McMillan and sons Ben and Aaron), and Tony (Brenda and daughters Kimberly and Melissa) and by her 5-and-1/2 great-grandchildren (Eli, Ian, Mac, Adam, Emma, and one on the way).

We would especially like to thank John Dunn, Harold Boyd, and other church members for helping Evelyn to remain in her home as desired for longer than would otherwise have been possible.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 14th at Mills River United Methodist Church. Burial in the church cemetery will be at 12:30 p.m.
