Hildegarde Elizabeth “Hilda” Burkarth, age 91 of Tryon, died Friday, June 8, 2018 at White Oak Manor. She was born November 11, 1926 in Pottsville, PA; a daughter of the late, Maximilian and Kathrin Prumer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Karl F. Burkarth; and by one brother, Richard Prumer.
While living in Rockaway, New Jersey; Hilda began her 26 year career as an assistant cook at Stoney Brook School and later achieved the position of head cook. She later became co-owner HI Catering for many years. She also served as President of St. Cecilia’s Rosary Society for four years. Following her retirement to Etowah in 1985, she served as a teacher’s aide with Immaculata Catholic School in Hendersonville for 12 years. She loved her family dearly and enjoyed traveling to different family celebrations. She also enjoyed cooking, Army football tailgating, going to the theater, being a member of the Red Hat Society and enjoyed her weekly lunch and cards with special friends. She loved music such as, Johann Strauss, Dean Martin, Patriotic music and Waltzes.
She is survived by her two daughters, Linda Odierno and her husband, GEN Ray Odierno, US Army, Ret. of Pinehurst and Karen Dyson and her husband, COL Greg Dyson, US Army, Ret. of Fort Montgomery, NY; five grandchildren, CPT Anthony Odierno, US Army, Ret. and his wife, Daniela, Kathrin Funk and her husband, Nick, Michael Odierno, MAJ Matthew Dyson, US Army and his wife, Jaclyn and Sarah Martin and her husband, Adam; and by seven great-grandchildren, Brennan, Albie, Gianluca, Alessandro, Claire, Paige and Charles.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Tryon, officiated by Father Jason Christian.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations in Hilda’s memory be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675 or to Immaculata Catholic School, 711 N. Buncombe Street, Hendersonville, NC 28791.
