Katharine Watkins Wylde, age 86 of Hendersonville, moved on to Glory on Thursday, October 26th, 2017. Kathy was born in Boston and raised in Highland Park, Illinois, a daughter of the late Jesse Mather Watkins, Jr. and Evelyn Rose Metcalf Watkins.

She was a Hendersonville resident for over 50 years, and lived at Carolina Village for 8 ½ years. She came to Hendersonville in 1967 with her three young sons to be near her parents, who were established in retirement.

Kathy attended Ferry Hall in Lake Forest, Illinois and graduated from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota with a Bachelor’s degree in the liberal arts. At Carleton, she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and met her husband, Robert Thurston Wylde. She later completed a program in Accounting at the University of Denver. During her former husband’s military service, Kathy was employed by the U.S. Army Intelligence Service in Stuttgart, Germany. The couple was able to discover Europe.

Kathy was a lifelong Presbyterian, and descended from Puritans who arrived in Boston in 1635. She was an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville for many years. She served as a Deacon, Elder and in other capacities, and took her Christian responsibility seriously. Aware of her early privilege, she was committed to the underprivileged.

Kathy was involved with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) for years, and served as treasurer of the Four Seasons Chapter of NAMI. She was a life member of the PEO service organization.
Kathy’s young adulthood was spent in the Chicago and Denver areas. She was employed in the insurance industry, for Washington National, Wausau, and the Travelers. In Hendersonville she worked for 25 years in accounting/bookkeeping at Margaret R. Pardee Memorial Hospital until her retirement.

Kathy is deeply missed by her three sons and their spouses: Alan (Sally) Wylde of Northampton, MA, Jim (Karen Gladbach) Wylde of Arlington, VA, and Robert Eric (Lisa) Wylde of Morganton, NC.
She is also dearly missed by two sisters: Judy Watkins of Stone Mountain, GA, and Mary Crane of Glen Arbor, MI; four grandchildren: Meredith, Richard, Alejandra, and Carlos; two step-grandchildren, Victor and Nicole; two great grandchildren: Iris, and Augie; one step-great-granddaughter, Breanna; and her niece and nephew.

A celebration of Kathy Wylde’s life will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 18th, 2017 at Trinity Presbyterian Church on Blythe Street in Hendersonville. A reception will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations in Kathy’s memory be directed to the Four Seasons Chapter of NAMI, P.O. Box 2108, Hendersonville, NC 28793; http://namifourseasons.org.

Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors and Cremation Memorial Center is in charge of the arrangements.
