Lois Wilson Schwalbach, age 94 of Hendersonville, died Friday, March 9, 2018 at the Elizabeth House. She was the loving wife of Harvey Schwalbach, with whom she shared 71 years of marriage that began with a road trip to Mexico and always included much travel and high adventure. She was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota; she was the daughter of the late Robert Edward and Marie Hall Wilson.
Lois graduated from St. Catherine’s University with a B.S. degree in special diet nutrition and remained a life-long student. She worked with autistic children and was involved in Girl Scouts, P.E.O., the Association of American University Women and Junior Welfare. Lois was a charter member of the League of Women Voters and, as an avid reader, Friends of the Library. She was a devout Catholic and Camp Fire Girl forever. Lois loved and sold antiques, had a penchant for arts and crafts, and went swimming whenever she could.
Throughout her life, Lois was known for her elegance, thoughtfulness, patience and impeccable attention to detail. She believed in the importance of love, the value of sharing and the wisdom of expressing gratitude. She was especially thoughtful when giving gifts and never had a cross word for those she held close. Friends once made were her friends for life. As a mother, Lois taught by good example. As family historian, she was known to have the memory of an elephant.
Lois is survived by her husband, Harvey; her three children, Bob and his wife, Jude, Jeanne and Betsy; seven grandchildren, Reed and her husband, Chris, Joshua, Heron and his wife, Tara, Matthew and his wife, Darcy, Maggie, Marc and Zachary; one great-granddaughter, Vivianne; and by three sisters, Mary Jo, Kathy and Bobbi. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Richard.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 9, 2018 in the Our Lady of Angels Chapel of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church celebrated by Father Martin Schratz.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations in Lois’s memory be directed to Four Seasons Hospice, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731; or to Immaculata Catholic School, 711 North Buncombe Street, Hendersonville, NC 28791.
