Margaret A. Cotter, Age 90,  died peacefully at Heather Glen in Arden, North Carolina, on April 17, 2018.  She was born on August 1, 1929, in Frankfort, Michigan, the daughter of the late Anna Jenness Van Tuyl Dudley and Ralph Waldo Muncy.

 

Marge grew up in Lower and Upper Michigan skipping 2nd and 5th grades.  She moved to California during her senior year of high school graduating from Berkeley High School.  She stayed on in California and received an Associate’s Degree from University of California at Berkeley with a major in Languages and minor in History.  She then moved back to Michigan where she met Henry Clinton Cotter, co-owner of Terrace Delicatessen.  They married on October 2, 1948, in Traverse City.  They moved to Elyria, Ohio, in 1951 where Marge began her journalistic career with the Chronicle-Telegram newspaper.

 

She began as a proof-reader moving on to the copy desk (rim then slot editor) and leaving as assistant news editor when she and Henry moved back to Traverse City where she joined the Record-Eagle newspaper.  There she served as news editor, section editor and managing editor.  She regularly wrote two popular columns per week on dining and Marge’s Memos on community and special interest topics.  On her retirement from the Record-Eagle in 1992, Mr. Bogley, President & Publisher, wrote “Let me formally salute your enormous contributions to this newspaper over the last twenty years.”   During her journalistic career Marge won numerous state and national awards for writing, editing and photography.

 

After retiring, Marge moved to Hendersonville, NC, remaining active by free-lance writing, editing the newsletter for the Congregational Church, playing Scrabble, and helping at Kilwins where she was a fixture making lemonade during Garden Jubilee and Apple Festival.

 

Marge belonged to many professional and service organizations serving in many leadership roles.  She was President of Michigan Press Women and the Quota Club.  She served on Boards for Munson Corporate, Salvation Army (Chair), and Pioneer Study Center, and on Traverse City Chamber of Commerce Committees.She was a friend and founder of the NW Michigan Alcohol Treatment Center.  Other organizations she belonged to included National Federation of Press Women, Professional Journalism Society, Business and Professional Women, Women’s Economic Development Organization, Traverse City Woman’s Club, Eagles Auxiliary, and Daisy Chain.  Supporting her children, she was active in PTA (President), Scouting and DeMolay.

 

Marge loved to travel and took her children and grandchildren on wonderful trips.

 

Her husband of 34 years, Henry died in 1983.

 

Marge is survived by her daughter Jen (Ken) Butcher of Hendersonville NC and their children Jonah (Lauren) Butcher and great-granddaughter Lilah of Asheville, NC; Sam (Sarah Bennett) Butcher with great-grandsons Charlie and Bennett of Washington, DC; and Steve (Carlyn) Butcher with great-grandchildren Arren and Farah of Alexandria, VA; and by her son Van (Irene) Cotter of Raleigh, NC, and their children Lisa (Jeff) Bennett of Charlottesville, VA, and Jeffrey Cotter of Royal Oak, MI; a step-brother Tom (Kathy) Dudley of Glendale, CA, and step-nieces and step-nephews; and aunt Hilda Kahle of Seattle, WA.

 

A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday May 9, 2018, at 2 pm at the Thos. Shepherd’s Church Street Chapel, 125 South Church Street, in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

 

In August, the family will gather in Traverse City, Michigan, for her interment in Oakwood Cemetery.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, 31 Glendale Ave., Asheville, NC  28803.
