Mariette Simmons Weisheit, age 96 of Marriottsville, MD died peacefully with family Sunday, February 2, 2020 at Sun Valley – The Woods assisted living. She was born August 5, 1924 in Albany New York; daughter of Marguerite Barillon and Robert Simmons. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lt. Col. Arthur Joseph Weisheit, her sister Etienette Pene of Vielle-Adour, France, and her first husband, Jean Lapree of La Rochelle, France.
Mariette traveled to France with her French Mother at 6 months of age. Mariette’s grandmother, Julia, lived with her and her mother in La Rochelle France. Her mother worked very hard to support Mariette and Julia. As a result, Mariette was very close to her grandmother. Mariette would also travel to Vielle-Adour in the Pyrenees mountains of southern France to visit her dear sister Etienette and Etienette’s 6 children. During WWII, Mariette met and married an older Frenchman, Jean Lapree. Mariette and Jean Lapree had a daughter, Martine. Though the marriage to Jean Lapree did not last, the friendships Mariette made with some of Jean’s children remain to this day. In particular, Yolande Lapree of La Rochelle will forever be like a sister to Mariette. After graduating from secretary post graduate studies, Mariette worked for the US Army in La Rochelle as a secretary where she met Arthur Weisheit (US Army WWII and Korean war veteran). They returned with Martine to the USA in 1955. Mariette and Arthur had 3 children, Patricia Weisheit Johnsgard (Oregon), and twins Michelle Weisheit Ratliff (Maryland) and Daniel Weisheit (Georgia). Mariette and Arthur enjoyed living in Evansville Indiana, Port Richey Florida, and then settled in the beautiful mountains of Hendersonville, NC in 1971. In 1975, Arthur was laid to rest in Hendersonville, while Mariette continued to raise her 12yr old twins as a single mom. Mariette managed her own daycare in Hendersonville where she loved and helped raise some pretty special people. While growing up in France, Mariette was a member of the Catholic church, but later joined the Lutheran church after marrying Arthur. Mariette and Arthur were members of Grace Lutheran Church in Hendersonville, NC for many years. More recently, Mariette was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Sykesville, Maryland where she attended with her daughter Michelle and son-in-law Clifford Ratliff. Mariette lived with Michelle and Cliff and helped raise their 3 boys Bradley, Christopher, and Ryan. All three boys were very close to their “MeMe” and will sorely miss their grandmother. Amber and Adam, children of Daniel, were very important to MeMe and will also miss her terribly. Cliff was like a son to Mariette and his actions and love towards Mariette was evident and appreciated especially by Mariette’s only son, Daniel. Mariette has lived in many states and along each of these stops has found amazing friendships and life-long friends. That is a testament to her beautiful and loving spirit. Mariette loved flowers and gardening, cooking for her family, and talking on the phone to all of her friends and family. She also loved her dogs … her Pomeranian Suzette and her Shitzu Gaston had pretty amazing lives no doubt. Mariette’s children and their spouses all agree that she was the most amazing mother, teacher, friend, and confidant. Oh the stories we have to share! Although Mariette is gone from this earth, she lives on in her children and grandchildren and will watch over them from heaven forever.
Mariette is survived by her daughter, Martine Byers (Jay) of Logansport IN, daughter Patricia Johnsgard (Jay) of Oregon, twins Michelle Ratliff (Cliff) of Marriottsville, MD, and Daniel Weisheit (Debbie) of Fayetteville, GA, grandchildren Monty (Michele), Monique (Todd), Jason (Cindy), Erika(Simon), Joseph(Jordan), Allison(Edward), Bradley(Lindsay), Christopher, Ryan, Amber(Joseph), and Adam(Hope) and 7 great-grandchildren, Kennedy, Alex, Caleb, Alek, Ellie, Essie, and Addie, and many nieces and nephews and extended family here in the states and France.
