POLLY RUTH PENLAND

August 7, 1952 – June 24, 2018

 

Polly Ruth Penland, 65, of Hendersonville, N.C., died Sunday, June 24, 2018, of complications of ALS.  Born in Atlanta, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Thomas E. Penland, Jr. and the late Katherine Arnold Penland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Robert Howard Penland.

 

She was graduated in 1974 from Furman University with a bachelor’s degree in history.She earned a master’s degree in social work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1979.

 

Polly resided in Henderson County since 1985.

 

Polly’s vocation and avocation were in the area of service to families and children.For 44 years she was a therapist, advocate, and leader in Henderson and surrounding counties.Polly was dedicated to advocacy for women and children.She was a founding member of the Fund for Southern Communities and founding Board Member of the local child advocacy group Friends of Children’s United Services. Polly also was a founding member of REACH of Macon County and planner for the original Child Advocacy Center in Henderson County.She worked on numerous committees and groups dealing with the intersection of the justice system and mental health and regularly gave professional testimony in juvenile cases.

 

Polly was a gifted, compassionate psychotherapist and clinical supervisor in the public and private sectors.She helped generations of families and children heal and launched many new therapists to serve the community.She worked for Blue Ridge Community Mental Health Center and TREND Community Mental Health Services.She was a founding member of Mountain Counseling Associates, where she provided counseling services until just before her death.

 

Polly was a lover of the mountains, fresh water lakes, the beach, and gardening.She specially loved growing dahlias.She considered her home to be protected by her fairy gardens filled with her woodland flowers and vegetables.Polly loved having her friends and relatives feasting and celebrating with her in her role as the family matriarch.

 

 

She is survived by her husband James T. Anderson; her daughter,
Kelsey Penland Anderson and her son-in-law, Graham M. Whitley, both of San Antonio, Texas; her sister-in-law Margaret Anderson of Raleigh ; her brother-in-law Roy Anderson of Hendersonville, and Roy’s son, Eric Anderson; her brothers, James W. Penland and his wife Ruth Primm of Atlanta, Ga., and their children Michael and his wife Natalie, Michelle and her husband Bryan Dodson, Thomas and Katherine; and Lee Thomas Penland and his wife Katie D. Kelly of
Tiger, Ga.; and Lee’s children Leah and Lauren and Lauren’s husband Chandler Van de Water and their children Everly and Finn.

 

 

Friends and family will gather on Friday, June 29, 2018, from 5 to 7 PM at Thos. Shepherd & Son, 125 S. Church St., Hendersonville, NC 28792.

 

 

A memorial celebration will be held July 14, 2018, starting at 2 PM at Jubilee Community Church, 46 Wall St., Asheville, NC 28801.

 

 

Memorials may be sent to the N.C. Chapter of the ALS Association, 4 N. Blount St., Suite 200, Raleigh, NC 27601 or to Four Seasons Compassion for Life Foundation, 221 N. Main Street, Hendersonville, NC 28792.
