In the words of the Apostle Paul in Timothy 4:7, and having fought a good fight, finished his course, and kept the faith, Pastor David “Lewis” Staton went to be with his Lord on Thursday, December 20, 2018 at his home.

He was born February 12, 1936, to the late John Paul Staton and Lena Beddingfield Staton.  Pastor Staton is also preceded in death by his beloved grandson, Matthew David King; and a brother, Steve Staton.

He was a life-long resident of Henderson County, and graduated as valedictorian of the 1954 Class of Flat Rock High School.  Pastor Staton was employed by E. I. DuPont in Brevard, NC for 25 years as Senior Cost Accountant.  The road leading to the plant was named “Staton Road” in his honor because of his efforts to acquire a safe and better road.  He was honored to serve as Pastor of Green River Baptist Church in Zirconia, NC from 1967 to 1978.  He later led the efforts to establish Maranatha Baptist Church in East Flat Rock, NC; and served as Pastor for 35 years.  Among his many endeavors to spread the Gospel was his love and active support of Gideons International, local missionaries, and southern Gospel shape note music.  Pastor Staton was most proud to have formed a corporation to distribute a children’s Bible story book “Egermeier’s Bible Story Book” to the children of Russia in their language.  With the help of many Christian organizations and individuals, the book was translated and thousands of copies were placed in Russia.  He, in the company with other individuals, was blessed to travel to Russia to distribute the first shipment of books.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Sibyl Hill Staton; a daughter, Kathy S. King; a sister Daphne S. Hedden all of Hendersonville; a sister, Pam “Susie” Staton and a brother, Scott Staton both of Idaho; and a “sister in love”, Eugenia “Jean” Hill Jackson of Flat Rock.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, December 28, 2018 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park conducted by Rev. Michael Jackson and Harold Corn and assisted by Rev. Steve Gibbs and Rev. Seth Nichols.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at Maranatha Baptist Church.
