Virginia Green Traband Fish, age 103, of Hendersonville, NC, died Sunday, November 3, 2019 at The Laurels in Hendersonville, NC. She was born in Westchester County, NY, on January 16, 1916 to the late Harold Traband and Hazel Green Traband. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Raleigh R. Fish, her brother, George Harvey Traband and his wife Jane B. Traband, and step-daughter MarylinBarry.
Virginia graduated from Barnard College of Columbia University, New York, NY, in 1938 with a Bachelor’s degree. She was knowledgeable in French, German, Spanish and Italian. Her dream was to be an opera singer. Instead she taught in two private schools and helped manage her family’s household when her beloved brother contracted TB. During his recovery in Indian Lake, NY, she met the love of her life, Raleigh Fish.
Raleigh was a widower with three children. They married on July 16, 1949. She loved her Lord, Jesus Christ and loved her family. She reached out to those in her community through her church and the school. She was a tutor for many children in her small community of Sabael, NY. She even recognized and helped one student who had dyslexia, a relatively undiagnosed ailment at the time.
After her husband, Raleigh’s death, she spent her time caring for her mother, being involved in Bible studies and writing to and encouraging her friends and acquaintances. After moving to Henderson County from New York, she volunteered for several years at Dana Elementary School. She loved to sing, especially the old hymns. She was a bright light to everyone she met.
Virginia is survived by her daughter, Stephanie and husband, Robert Wordsworth, her son Stephen and his wife, Laura, step-daughter Ginny Lee and husband John Whitehead, step-son Ramon and wife, Sharon, 10 grandchildren, Dean Briggs, Kathy Santos, Shelley Fore, Laurie Brock, Kirk Eakes, Shari Brittain, Josh Williams, Heather Deibler, Ami Fish and Traci Edworthy, 14 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Her final years were spent under the excellent care of the wonderful staff at The Laurels, Hendersonville, NC. The family wishes to thank them for their beautiful care of Virginia and the love and compassion they showed her.
